The History of Embedded Systems

Recently we contemplated What is an Embedded System?, and here's a video that attempts to answer that question, at least on a macro level.

If you're really new to the concept of an embedded system, it's worth watching the whole thing. But even if your an embedded systems veteran, it's fun to revisit some of the early history of microcontrollers, and marvel at how far they've come, and how quickly they've changed.

This video was made to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose, CA in 2008. This particular piece opened up the keynote celebration, which featured 3 video interviews and 6 live speakers, as well as a live teardown of two cell phones.

The video was directed and edited by Brian Lynn of Skynerd Media in Chicago, IL.
